A fire broke out overnight at a four-story hotel in New Zealand, killing at least six people.

The country’s prime minister, Chris Hipkins, told the AM morning news program that he knew there could be more deaths.

But police said they believed the death toll could be fewer than 10.

Emergency services were called to the Loafers Lodge in Wellington, the country’s capital, at around 12.30am local time.

“This is our worst nightmare,” Fire and Emergency Regional Manager Nick Pyatt said, describing the incident as “Wellington’s once-in-a-decade fire”.

The fire department said 52 people were unaccounted for, but some remained unaccounted for.

Firefighters rescued five people from the roof of the building, 1News reported.

A number of people were taken to Wellington Hospital, with one in a serious condition and four others in a fair condition.

Fifteen people were treated at the scene.

“I can regret to report that this will be a multi-fatal incident,” Mr Pyatt added.

“At this time, our hearts are with the families of the victims and with our crew who bravely rescued those (they were able to) and tried to rescue those they could not.”

The cause of the fire was not yet known, but police said they would be investigating with fire and emergency officials.

Loafers Lodge advertises itself as an affordable place to stay for people while in the capital, whether traveling on business or needing to visit the nearby Wellington Hospital.

It has 92 rooms and advertises them as long-term availability.
