Athanaze scores 65 in debut as West Indies sweep UAE in ODI

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Alick Athanaze led the West Indies with 65 in a one-day international series as they swept the United Arab Emirates on Friday. .

The Emirates opted to bat first and were conceded 184 balls from 37 fumbles in the third over, the lowest total in the series. West Indies deputy Kevin Sinclair led the pack on his series debut, going 4-24 from 7.1 overs. Legspinner Yannic Cariah took both tails.

West Indies comfortably hit the target with 35.1 runs and won by four wickets.

Both teams are using the series to prepare for this weekend’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

All-round batsman Athanaze from the Windward Islands gave West Indies a solid start with a 45-ball 65 that included nine fours and three sixes. He was the second out, after legs.

Shamarh Brooks added a patient 39 and captain Roston Chase completed the chase to 185-6 with an unbeaten 27 off 32 balls.

Vriitya Aravind tops the UAE team with 70 points.

The UAE led 150-3 in the 23rd inning. But the debacle started after consecutive outs for newcomers Ethan De Sousa and Rohan Mustafa, whom Aravind didn’t want to play. Aravind was lbw against Sinclair, hitting the front pad in line with the middle stump, 166-6, and the Emirates went on six more.

Opener and skipper Mohammad Wasim backed Aravind with 40 in their 69 overs together.
