Both AT&T and Verizon will launch new 5G services on Wednesday. However, both companies announced they were suspending the launch of their services near some airports after major airlines voiced their concerns about services hampering aircraft technology.
according to ABC News, on Tuesday, AT&T and Verizon both announced decisions to halt some deployments. For now, it’s unclear how long things will be on hold. However, the decision comes after airlines said they wanted the companies to ban their new services at least two miles from the airport’s runway.
AT&T first announced their decision to delay opening new cell towers around runways at some airports as they work with federal regulators to resolve the issue. Verizon said they would roll out their 5G service, adding: “We made a voluntary decision to limit our 5G network around airports.”
They also added that the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) “cannot fully solve the problem of navigating 5G around airports.”
Some major airline CEOs have said that disruptions from the new 5G service will make flights unflying, and the impact will be worse than they first thought. “Frankly, the nation’s commerce will come to a standstill,” they said in a letter to officials.
The Biden administration also played a role in AT&T and Verizon’s decision to suspend service near airports as they tried to resolve their issues with airlines. President Biden said the companies’ decision “will avoid potentially damaging disruptions to passenger travel, cargo operations and our economic recovery, while keeping more than 90 percent of wireless tower deployments on schedule.”
Some of the major airlines that have expressed concern about offering new 5G service near airports include United, American, Delta and Southwest.
