Karachi: Right-handed explosive batsman Azam Khan has become the first Pakistani cricketer to be signed by the newly-introduced cash-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE) league.

The tough hitters will represent the Desert Vipers, promoted by the Glazer family, as the franchise gets Azam’s services for the inaugural International League T20.

Azam became the first Pakistani cricketer to be recruited by the Emirates League after signing with the ILT20 franchise, sparking controversy over the threat to international cricket.

On Twitter, Desert Vipers also confirmed the signing of Pakistan slugger Azam, calling it an exciting addition to the squad.

“Pakistan [wicketkeeper-batter] Azam Khan is an exciting addition to Desert Vipers! ” the ILT20 franchise wrote.

“He is one of the best spinners in the world in T20 cricket, averaging 35 overs per game and batting 160 over slower bowlers – Azam is perfect for attacking those midfielders [Desert Vipers],” the title added.

Earlier, Azam was also awarded a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The right-handed batsman will represent the Barbados Royals in the league, which starts on September 1.

Azam has played three T20I games for Pakistan and represented Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators in the PSL, Overseas Warriors in the Kashmir Premier League and Galle Gladiators in the Sri Lanka Premier League.
