Azerbaijan accuses Armenia of “ethnic cleansing” in UN Tribunal | UN News

[ad_1]

Nearly a year since the ceasefire agreement was signed, the two rivals are accusing each other in the International Court of Justice.

Azerbaijan has accused Armenia of planting landmines in Nagorno-Karabakh as part of the “ethnic cleansing” campaign to the United Nations Supreme Court, although End with hostility Between two opponents.

Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ernur Mamadov asked the International Court of Justice to order Armenia to stop planting landmines, provide Azerbaijan with maps of minefields, and take measures to stop incitement to ethnic hatred.

“Ethnic cleansing in Armenia and incitement of violence against Azerbaijanis are ongoing,” Mamadov told the Hague court on Monday.

“There is an urgent need to take temporary measures to prevent further irreparable harm.”

Last fall, the two former Soviet republics fought a six-week battle for the secession area. Nagorno-Karabakh In a conflict that claimed the lives of more than 6,500 people.

The fighting ended after Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Pashinyan signed a ceasefire agreement, which granted Azerbaijan control over parts of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories occupied by Armenians.

Mamadov said that after part of the area was “liberated” last year, Azerbaijani civilians who returned to their homes discovered that the area was “covered with mines” by Armenia.

He said that Armenia “still refuses to share the complete and accurate landmine map needed to advance the clearance operations, and even continues to plant new mines on the territory of Azerbaijan.”

“This is just a continuation of the decades-long ethnic cleansing campaign in Armenia one Try to keep this territory free of Azerbaijanis in pursuit of a desperate revengeist design. ” [is the an supposed to be and? Or it is missing a comma?]

According to figures quoted by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, since the end of the conflict last year, at least 106 Azerbaijanis have been killed or injured by landmines, including 65 civilians.

The representative of Armenia, Yeghishe Kirakosyan, urged the court to reject these requests, stating that the Azerbaijani case “is a strategy designed to… give the impression that Azerbaijan is a real victim.”

Kirakosyan denied the allegations and told the judge, “In the context of resolving all outstanding humanitarian issues, we are ready to provide more maps that we have.”

The complaint is as follows One brought by Armenia Last week, Azerbaijan was accused of inciting national hatred and demanding the release of prisoners of war.

It may take several years for these two cases to reach a conclusion in the courts of The Hague.

The hearings in recent days have focused on the two countries’ requests for interim measures. The courts can enforce these measures to prevent actions that may affect the case.

The judge may decide on these requests in the next few weeks.
