Baker McKenzie vows to rebuild in UAE after split with anti-gay partner

Dr. Habib Al Mulla is the firm’s most senior partner in the Gulf and leads Habib Al Mulla & Partners. The two companies are allied through a Swiss confederation structure, giving Bakers a unique advantage in accessing local courts.

A spokesman for Baker McKenzie said it was now establishing an interim management team in Dubai as it negotiated with Habib Al Mulla and his company and looked for a new office.

“Baker McKenzie is proud of our rich and long-standing history of over 40 years in the Gulf, and we are now establishing an interim management team in the UAE to drive the business forward,” the spokesman said.

“We will continue to invest and grow our business in the UAE, building on recent recruitment in areas such as mergers and acquisitions, employment, data privacy and taxation. Additionally, we have been discussing the relocation of our Dubai office, possibly DIFC center, where many of our clients do business.”

“We remain firmly committed to serving our customers and people in the UAE and the wider Gulf region.”

The rift between Bakers and its most senior lawyer in the UAE takes place at RollOnFriday Undiscovered Tweets In it, Al Mulla posted to his 61,000 followers that “the problem with homosexuality in the West is not just the ugliness of behavior”, but that through “his evil deeds” homosexuals “disobeyed the Creator”. He went on to include homosexuality along with drugs, “pedophilia and atheism” on the list of problems exported by the West.

Baker McKenzie said on its website that it was “proud to be called an LGBT+ inclusive workplace” and decided to cut ties with Al Mulla. His ouster drew an enthusiastic response online from supporters, many of whom declared they were proud of the lawyer’s stance. Some even called for a boycott of Baker.

Several Almura defenders have detailed their opposition to homosexuality, tying it to their religious beliefs. A typical response is that “homosexuality is a setback of human instinct, a dangerous deviation from the law of Almighty God”. Others are more open.

After the story broke, Al Mulla tweeted: “The news of Baker’s departure is true, we will operate as an independent office and we will continue to serve our clients as we have always done. I remain silent and will not comment on what happened. comment. Respect our relationship.”

However, he followed up with a series of tweets saying, “I want to thank all my brothers and sisters who have voiced their support for my position on video and gay issues.”

“The personal views I share represent my beliefs and beliefs that stem from my religion and core values. I am very proud of this and will not apologize for my comments. Although we are a tolerant society, We welcome those who think differently than us, and we reject any ideas or beliefs that are imposed on us or that go against our Islamic ideals.”

He also tweeted in support of those who called Bakers “losers” who succumbed to “left-awakened extremists.”
