Bangladesh boat capsizes: Around 20 dead, 30 missing after Panchagar boat capsizes; rescue operation underway

[ad_1]

Dhaka, September 25: A boat capsized in the Panchagarh district of northern Bangladesh, killing at least 20 people. According to the Dhaka Tribune, at least 30 people are still missing and the death toll is likely to rise.

Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Jahirul Islam confirmed that the incident was reported from Aowlia Ghat, Marea Union, on Sunday afternoon. A team of divers from Dhaka was scouring the river for more bodies, as thousands crowded the banks to watch the search work. Bangladesh: At least 23 dead and several missing in a boat capsize on the Karatoa River in Panchagarh.

Boat accidents in Bangladesh are common due to lax safety standards and overloading. Because Bangladesh is located downstream of mighty rivers, the Ganges and Brahmaputra, the country is crisscrossed by 230 rivers. It is worth noting that in December last year, a passenger ship collided with a cargo ship and sank, killing some 37 people by drowning.

At least 85 people drowned when an overloaded three-decker ferry capsized on the southern island of Bhola in November. A week later, another ship sank, killing 46 people. Dozens of people have been killed in several smaller boat accidents in Bangladesh so far this year.

Navy officials say more than 95 percent of Bangladesh’s hundreds of thousands of small and medium-sized ships do not meet minimum safety requirements. But millions of people in Bangladesh rely on boats and ferries to get to the capital or major cities in the delta country.
