Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) has announced that its operations and maintenance subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company (Nawah), has connected Barakah NPP’s Unit 3 to the UAE’s transmission grid. Unit 3, which started up in September, will supply an additional 1,400 MW to the grid, in addition to the combined supply of 2,800 MW from Units 1 and 2.

Once connected to the grid, the Korean-designed APR-1400 unit will undergo a process of gradually increasing its power level, known as a power boost test or PAT. Enec said the process will be continuously monitored and tested until maximum power generation is achieved, while complying with all local regulatory requirements and the highest international safety, quality and security standards.

Construction work on the four units at Barakah began in 2012. Unit 1 was commissioned and connected to the grid in 2020, followed by Unit 2 in 2021. Both units are now in full commercial operation. Unit 4 is in the final stages of commissioning. Once all four units are operational, they will contribute up to 25% of the UAE’s nationally determined contribution to net-zero emissions and become the largest dispatchable source of clean electricity.
