SHARJAH – BEEAH Recycling has signed an agreement with the UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI) and the American University of Sharjah (AUS) to establish the country’s first end-of-life battery recycling plant for electric vehicles.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the World Future Energy Summit 2023 at the booth of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and Infrastructure.
The agreement was signed by Khaled Al Huraimel, CEO of BEEAH Group, along with Daker El-Rabaya, CEO of BEEAH Recycling, Sharif Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and Prof. Juan Sanchez, Provost of the American University of Sharjah.
The electric vehicle battery recycling facility will be added to BEEAH Recycling’s integrated waste management complex, which currently houses ten dedicated waste treatment and material recovery facilities, which enable the emirate of Sharjah to achieve a waste conversion rate of 76%, for highest in the Middle East.
With more EV batteries nearing end-of-life, increasing EV battery recycling facilities will help further increase waste diversion from landfills in the future. BEEAH Recycling, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the American University of Sharjah have agreed to collaborate and identify world-class technology for electric vehicle battery recycling facilities.
Commenting on the agreement, Al Huraimel said: “Combining BEEAH Recycling’s material recycling expertise, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure’s national vision and foresight, and cutting-edge research from the US University of Sharjah, we will be able to develop an ideal, future-proof strategy. Ultimately, our efforts will lead to sustainable, zero-waste and net-zero growth in the EV market, consistent with national, regional and global sustainability agendas.”
The UAE is witnessing a growing shift from conventional cars to electric vehicles. In a 2022 study, more than 30% of Emiratis are considering switching to electric vehicles. Forecasts show that the EV market will grow at a CAGR of 30% between 2022 and 2028.
Elaborating on the agreement, El-Rabaya said: “As BEEAH Recycling, we implement a zero waste strategy to support the creation of a circular economy across industries. We want to advance our contribution to circularity and material recovery within the electric vehicle industry, which is essential to Achieving net zero emissions in the UAE and beyond is critical.”
Al Olama, in turn, said, “Ensuring the future readiness and readiness of the electric vehicle market is closely linked to the Ministry of Energy’s goal of strengthening energy and infrastructure in the UAE. Using intelligence from BEEAH Recycling and the latest research from AUS, we look forward The right solutions to support green transportation are found in communities. Our exploration will also align with national and global sustainability agendas that prioritize achieving net zero emissions, diverting waste from landfills and creating a circular economy.”
Professor Sanchez said it was a landmark project that, in the long run, would help make electric vehicles more affordable and sustainable, protect the environment from toxic impacts and provide raw materials for battery manufacturing.
