Belinda Bencic beat Lyudmila Samsonova 1-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4 in the Abu Dhabi final.
ABU DHABI (AFP) – Olympic champion Belinda Bencic saved three match points to defeat Lyudmila Samsonova in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi final, won her eighth career title.
The 25-year-old world No. 9 saved three championship points in a marathon second-set tie-break in a 1-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4 win.
It was Bencic’s second title of 2023 after winning in Adelaide, and she also leads the tour victories this season with 12-time Australian Open champion Alina Sabalenka ( Aryna Sabalenka) brushes past her.
“It was a very tight game and I’m happy to turn those match points around,” Bencic said.
“I just really tried to hang in there and go for every point and give my best. I showed myself that I can really work hard and just stay in the game and turn it around somehow.”
Bencic beat 19th-ranked Russian Samsonova for the first time in four meetings after losing the 2021 Berlin final, Luxembourg final and Billie Jean Gold Cup final.
Samsonova was a perfect 4-0 in the championship before Sunday.
