Trudeau’s party won the federal election but failed to obtain an absolute majority in Parliament
The White House said that US President Joe Biden spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday to congratulate him on his victory in the Liberal Party’s election.
According to a statement, the two leaders “emphasized the strong and deep friendship between the United States and Canada.”
They also discussed “a joint commitment to strengthen economic resilience and competitiveness” and coordinated responses to the pandemic.
Trudeau’s Liberal Party won Monday’s early elections but failed to obtain an absolute majority in Parliament during a difficult election campaign.
A statement from Trudeau’s office said that the two North American leaders “reaffirmed the importance of a mutually beneficial partnership between Canada and the United States for the security and prosperity of the two countries” and “committed to meet as soon as possible” to discuss bilateral cooperation.
The statement added that Trudeau and Biden also “discussed China’s arbitrary detention of Canadian citizens Michael Spavor and Michael Cummingkai.”
A few days before the Canadians voted, Trudeau received the support of former US President Barack Obama. Obama wrote on Twitter: “Justin has always been an effective leader and a powerful spokesperson for democratic values. “
