“Bruce, some people are born to run, man,” President Joe Biden said Tuesday as he presented rock singer Bruce Springsteen with the National Medal of Arts.
Springsteen and a host of actors, writers, singers and other artists joined Biden in the East Room of the White House, where they received the National Medal of Arts or National Medal in the Humanities for their contributions to American society.
Comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus was also honored for her “Vice” show, which disparaged the vice presidency — a position that Biden once held.
“She embraced the absurdity of life with sheer wit and handled real-life twists and turns with sheer grace. A mother, a cancer survivor, a pioneer of women in comedy, she was America’s original,” Biden said.
Actress Mindy Kaling, the lead actress on the long-running television show “The Office,” filmed in Biden’s hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, also received a medal.
When Biden introduced author Colson Whitehead to the crowd, he pointed to Whitehead’s two back-to-back Pulitzer Prize winners and hinted at his own ambitions.
“I’m trying to support myself,” said Biden, who has said he intends to run for re-election in 2024.
Singer Gladys Knight, “Queen of Soul,” was honored, along with costume designer Vera Wang, historian Walter Isaacson and authors Amy Tan, Ann Patchett and Tara Westover, among others.
