Reggaetón is becoming one of the most popular genres worldwide, but how has it developed and, more importantly, which women have left their mark on a male-dominated genre?

Reggaetón originated in Panama and continued in Puerto Rico, combining elements of reggae, Latin dancehall and hip-hop in the 1990s. Tego Calderón and others led the first wave of the genre, which Daddy Yankee brought to the masses in 2004 with his hit song “Gasolina”.
The Ivy Queen, also known as the First Lady of Reggae, was the first female artist to break down the barriers of the reggae genre. She started her career at a club called The Noise in Puerto Rico, where she was the first woman on stage and won her first fight. Her comeback single, “Muchos Quieren Tubarme,” stemmed from her performances in clubs, cementing her status as a reggae star.Since then, artists like Becky G, Natti Natasha have popped up with Karol G and her albums tomorrow will be fine Marks the first time an all-Spanish-language album by a female artist has hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
