BITS Pilani Dubai sets up mental health programme to tackle post-pandemic issues

Acknowledging the mental health challenges faced by everyone during the Covid-19 pandemic and recognizing the need for post-pandemic support, BITS (Birla Institute of Technology and Science) Dubai Pirani is an institution offering engineering programs for students, faculty and staff and teachers launched a mental health program. staff on their campus.

The treatment-based program will provide one-on-one counseling and high-quality clinical interventions for those facing depression, social anxiety, relationship problems or any other mental health issue. This broad health intervention program is designed to improve students’ life skills, particularly in the areas of self-management, stress management, emotional intelligence and time management.

The academic disruption caused by the pandemic has severely impacted the entire student community. So, as an extension of the wellness programme, leading engineering university BITS Pilani Dubai campus has also announced for the first time a week-long orientation programme for new post-Covid undergraduates to help them ease into university life and work.

BITS Pilani’s global reputation attracts bright, accomplished international students from all over the world. Currently, over 45% of students are international students registered from outside the UAE. As such, this orientation is designed to allow freshmen to understand the academic system, transition to university life, develop healthy relationships with peers and faculty, learn more about Emirati culture and adapt easily to the new environment.

A new batch this year, the school has enrolled students from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, India, Singapore, and for the first time, students from Indonesia, Thailand and Zambia. There has also been a sharp increase in female students at the institute this year, with 35 per cent of students currently enrolled are women.

BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus (BPDC) has partnered with major brands during Orientation Week such as CCC Shoes and Handbags, Sharaf DG, Desco Copy and Print Center, Noon.com, Quanta Ice Creams, Fishermans Hub, Royal Hyderabad Restaurant and more.

Director Srinivasan Madapusi said: “As vaccines, good hygiene and more become part of our lives and we transition to a post-Covid life, we must also focus on the psychological aspects of recovery. Young people have been through the traumatic experiences of the past 2 years and Challenges, including bereavement, social isolation, new educational models, and more.

“Our proactive initiatives to provide students and staff with counselling services, mental health workshops and more through professionals are designed to help everyone embrace the past and the new world and build resilience to future challenges. This is what we advocate in the education system and promotes part of the overall growth of the individual,” Madapsi said.

Eunice Fernandes Prakash, Consultant at BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, said: “The BPDC programme brings constructive changes to students’ perceptions of health. In addition to teaching how to deal with social stigma related to mental health, the programme encourages and empowers students to fight stress and learn Mindfulness and other techniques.”

“We organized various group discussions on topics such as ‘challenging unhelpful thinking’, ‘perfectionism’, ‘procrastination’, ‘relaxation techniques’, ‘coping with exam stress’ etc. Helping students come forward and talk their concerns and seek professional support to help themselves.
