What is the year of return?
The year of return, 2019, is associated with the 400th anniversary of American slaves on the land – the recorded arrival of enslaved Africans in the United States.
Ghana is a major transit point for slave shipments, so the president said he felt the country had a duty to welcome all those who were unfit to trace African ancestry.
“We believe we have a duty to extend a welcoming hand to the African diaspora.” President Nana Akufo-Adotoko.
How many more people are visiting Ghana?
In early 2019, the Ghana Tourism Board predicted that the return year would attract 500,000 additional tourists.
Official figures from January to September 2019 showed 237,000 new tourists – a 45% increase on the same period last year – with more visitors coming from the US and UK.
However, we don’t know if this is an initiative specifically for the Homecoming Year, as they do not require tourists to state the reason for their visit upon arrival.
Arrivals increased in 2019, totaling between 900,000 and 1 million Ghanaian foreign tourists per year, a number that has been going up anyway for the past few years, except say a slight decrease around 2018.
