Emirates Global Aluminum, the world’s largest producer of high-quality aluminum, has announced that the BMW Group has become the first customer for CelestiAL-R, EGA’s world-first hybrid of solar aluminum and recycled metal.
Since the beginning of 2023, all aluminum materials supplied by EGA to the BMW Group will be CelestiAL-R. The metal is used in the BMW Group’s electric drivetrain housings, engine components and large structural components.
Blending CelestiAL solar aluminum with recycled metal further reduces the CO2 intensity of metal production to less than 4 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of aluminum, depending on the specific alloy.
solar energy and waste
CelestiAL-R is the first combination of aluminum produced using solar energy and scrap metal to meet the stringent quality requirements of the automotive industry. EGA is able to produce CelestiAL-R to these specifications thanks to the high quality of EGA’s primary aluminum, the strict selection of scrap metal and the flexibility of EGA’s casting plant.
EGA’s Casthouses have a casting capacity of approximately 1 million tonnes, providing flexibility for separate production. EGA operates the only horizontal direct chilled casting machine in the Middle East, which prevents surface oxidation of the cast metal, resulting in higher quality ingots for the most demanding applications.
CelestiAL-R is tested for chemical, structural and mechanical properties at every step of the production process. Each month, EGA reports the results of around 230 comprehensive metal quality tests before the metal is shipped from the UAE to the BMW Group’s Landshut plant in Germany. Rigorous production processes and the required quality testing mean that CelestiAL-R takes longer to produce at EGA’s foundry than other EGA products.
Scrap for the CelestiAL-R comes from the UAE and includes engine blocks, wheels, wire and structural sections. Scrap is a mixture of post-consumer and pre-consumer industrial waste. All scrap that arrives at EGA is tested against 40 different chemical and other performance requirements.
big customer
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer, Emirates Global Aluminum, said: “The BMW Group has been a key customer of EGA for a decade. The BMW Group’s demand for the highest quality metal produced in the most responsible way has accelerated our progress in sustainability – — first CelestiAL Solar Aluminum and now CelestiAL-R. Our aim is to steadily increase the proportion of recycled metal in CelestiAL-R, further reducing the carbon intensity of our metals and the cars we drive.”
EGA has been supplying metal to the BMW Group since 2013. Since the launch of EGA’s CelestiAL solar aluminum product in 2021, the BMW Group has been the largest customer for the product.
EGA is the first company in the world to commercially produce aluminum using solar energy. The electricity required to produce industrial processes accounts for about 60 percent of the global aluminum industry’s greenhouse gas emissions. — trade arab news agency
