Bob Geldof unhappy with criticism of ‘white savior’.
Celebrities such as Stacey Dooley have faced backlash for visiting African countries for charity work, but the creators of Live Aid dismissed the outrage as “stale and stupid”.
Asked if the charity was trying too hard to avoid criticism, Bob told Radio Times: “I don’t think most people care about that. It’s just a wormhole where people disappear and everything can be deconstructed.
“But it’s cliché and stupid in my opinion. If someone gets hurt and I see it with my own eyes and I’m aware of it, I’ll do everything I can to minimize the hurt they get.”
Comic Relief promises that calls for Red Nose Day will be led by local filmmakers after criticizing Dooley for hugging Ugandan toddlers in 2019, but the Boomtown Rats frontman doesn’t think race should be an issue for charity work.
“Black savior, white savior, green savior, I’m all with them,” he said.
Bob created charity supergroup Band Aid to record the single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” – written by him and Ultravox star Midge Ure – after watching BBC News coverage of the 1984 Ethiopian famine. He also hosted Live Aid charity concerts to raise money for famine victims.
The 71-year-old musician also admitted that Band Aid, which plays every Christmas, drives him “crazy”.
Bob said: “This song has a life of its own. Every time it’s played in every f****** supermarket it raises money. It’s ‘Mistletoe and Wine’ for veggies, Slade for baked beans, tea and Wizzard of coffee and Band-Aid on the butcher’s counter. It’s driving me crazy at Christmas. But it’s there.
The music legend also showed his support for the Just Stop Oil climate campaigner, who threw tomato soup in a Van Gogh painting at the National Gallery in London.
Geldof said: “The climate activists are 1000% right. I support them 1000%.
“Destroying Van Gogh’s genius is distasteful. It doesn’t help. But it’s smart to throw it at the glass knowing it won’t be destroyed. It’s annoying. It’s good to be annoying.
“Pissing people off to change policy probably won’t work. Does that mean I’m against their zeal? Their anger? Their bravery? No. Will I live with it? They won’t kill anyone. Climate change will.”
