Bomb Explodes Outside Sayeda Zeinab Shrine in Damascus, Causing Deaths and Injuries. A bomb planted in a taxi exploded outside the Sayeda Zeinab shrine, located south of the Syrian capital, as reported by state media.
The car bomb, which detonated on Thursday, resulted in several fatalities and left others wounded, though the exact number of injured individuals remains uncertain.
The shrine had been witnessing an influx of pilgrims in recent days, who had gathered there for mourning rituals related to the Ashura religious commemoration observed by Shia Muslims.
The site holds significant religious importance as it is believed to be the burial place of Zeinab, the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad. Shia Muslims from various parts of the world visit the mausoleum for religious pilgrimage.
Video footage of the blast, shared on social media, showed people fleeing the scene and assisting the wounded to safety. However, the authenticity of the footage could not be verified. As of now, there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
Notably, this is not the first instance of violence near the Sayeda Zeinab shrine. In the past, several bomb attacks have occurred in its vicinity. One of the most significant incidents took place in January 2016, when three separate bombings resulted in 60 fatalities and over 100 injuries.
