“We believe the bomb has been there since Saturday,” police Colonel Chartchai Chanasit said, adding that no other explosive devices were found.
A low-level conflict has been brewing in southern Thailand since 2004, killing more than 7,000 people, as rebels in the Muslim-majority region vie for greater autonomy for the country.
The region – closely policed by Thai security forces – is culturally very different from the Buddhist-majority Thailand that controlled the region more than a century ago.
Last month, a car bomb exploded outside a police residence, killing one person and injuring more than two dozen before the explosion.
