Bono wants U2 to release a “noisy, uncompromising, irrational guitar album” before “Songs Of Ascent”.
The U2 frontman has revealed the upcoming record – which the group has been teasing since 2009 – as he longs to drop the AC/DC-style rock record first.
He said: “We all make mistakes. The prog-rock virus is in and we need a vaccine. The discipline of our songwriting, what made U2 produce – top melody, clear thinking – is gone.
“With the band, I thought, that’s not what we do, if we have songwriting, we can only do those experimental things. So we went to songwriting school, and we came back, and we’re good! It’s over that Two albums “Songs Of Innocence and Experience”, our songwriting is back. Now we need to put the rock fire back.
“I don’t know who’s going to make our rock album. You almost want an AC/DC, you want Mutt Lange. Method. Discipline. Songwriting discipline. That’s what we want.”
But Bono believes U2’s era of hit songs may be over, so he’s keen to compose a “f***-off-to-the-pop-charts rock ‘n’ roll song.”
He added in The New York Times: “I’d love to have a pop song on the radio. Maybe we’ve blazed a trail for that.
“So now I want to write the most ruthless, obnoxious, provocative, pop rock song we’ve ever done.
“I talked to Edge about it this week. He’d say, ‘Is that call again?’ “What call? “The one we’re going to write a fucking rock song about?” “
“I said, ‘Yeah, this is our job!’ We can make songs famous now, but I don’t think U2 can make them hits.”
