Bangladesh on Saturday demanded restraint from Myanmar as its troops used artillery at the border to escalate border tensions, killing a Rohingya child and wounding several others over the past few days.
“Bangladesh does want war,” Interior Minister Asadulzaman Khan Kamal told reporters when asked to comment on actions taken by Myanmar’s security forces at the border, leaving Bangladeshis and people sheltering in makeshift camps nearby. The Rohingya are terrified.
Kamal said Bangladesh would notify the United Nations if Myanmar did not stop firing near the border with Bangladesh because “we have warned Myanmar many times through the foreign ministry, but they have not heeded the warning”.

He said that Bangladesh hopes to resolve the issue with Myanmar peacefully, and hopes that its neighbors will realize their mistakes and will not do anything to hinder bilateral relations in the future.
“Because we don’t want conflict, we are trying to find a peaceful solution with Myanmar. We will do everything we can,” Kamal said, citing Myanmar’s actions to its internal conflict with rebel groups such as the Arakan Liberation Army.
“Sometimes the relationship between Myanmar and the Arakan Army is good, sometimes it turns into war for reasons we don’t know. But their war should definitely be within their purview,” he said.
Kamal said Dhaka has observed that Myanmar’s army has had nearly identical clashes with their own rebel groups in the Indian state of Mizoram and on the borders with Thailand and China, but “the conflict in their country (Myanmar) should remain within their borders”.
He said the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) was closely monitoring the situation on the border with Myanmar to prevent an influx from neighbouring countries.
“Our prime minister (Sheikh Hasina) never wanted war, we wanted a peaceful solution. Keep their internal conflicts within their borders. We always protest from the outside what is happening on our land ,”He says.
The minister’s remarks came a day after a Rohingya boy died and six people, including a Rohingya child, were shot and mortared on the Myanmar border in the Gumdhum district of southeastern Bangladesh’s Bandaban district on Friday. Bombed, seriously wounded.

Bangladesh currently provides shelter for more than 1.1 million Rohingya as they were forced into the country by Myanmar’s relentless military purge in August 2017.
Dhaka had earlier said it hoped to start the repatriation of Rohingya later this year, but experts said clashes between Myanmar’s military and rebels showed there were no conditions for the Rohingya to agree to return home.
