Brazil army upset by watermelon taunts from Bolsonaro fans | World News

[ad_1]

Brazil’s army is upset that its generals have been compared to “watermelons” in social media posts, suggesting they are green on the outside and communist red on the inside.

Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, recently failed presidential bidhave been compared because they Attempt to pressure the military to stage a coup on top of results.

Some accused senior generals of Luis Inacio Lula da Silvathe veteran leftist candidate narrowly defeated Mr Bolsonaro.

In one example, Twitter user Eugenia Moreira da Costa posted an image with the caption: “Here are 4 communist generals against the people, they want a Lula government.

“They’re General Watermelon, green on the outside and red on the inside.”

The military has refused to stage a coup or block the transfer of power, despite Mr Bolsonaro’s claims that the country’s electronic voting system was fraudulent.

The Army communications chief said he was told by force chiefs to object to any post that contained “lies and innuendo against members of the Army’s highest command,” according to a communiqué seen by Reuters.

General Jose Ricardo Vendramin Nunes wrote that such posts are “malicious and criminal attempts to tarnish the personal honor of soldiers who have served for more than 40 years.”

He called online criticism “disinformation” and insisted that “the Brazilian military remains cohesive and united”.

The army’s disdain for the watermelon comparison stands in stark contrast to the love it showed in Ukraine earlier this month.

After the liberation of Kherson, memes celebrating the fruit sprung up, as they are a well-known product in the region.

The Ukrainian prime minister even posted a picture of him holding an impressive specimen, with football club Shakhtar Donetsk joking that they were using the watermelon as a “special ball”.
