80 years old: Jim Curry hit a milestone on Sunday, Aug. 28, when he turns 80. As this birthday celebrant leaves the 70s to try this new number, may he find more happiness, love, good health, fond memories and continued blessings.
Goodbye: Farewell to two prominent community leaders – Drs. Morris and Diane Muffson – They are moving to Oak Park, Illinois. Dr. Mufson, known as “Maury”, is the Founding Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University and has been Professor Emeritus and Chair Emeritus since 2002. He has authored 220 original articles and book chapters in the scientific literature, won an infectious disease/research award, was a visiting scientist at the Department of Virology at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, and participated in other events. Diane, better known as “Deedee”, is a psychologist specializing in general psychology, a frequent columnist at The Herald-Dispatch, and a member of various clubs, to name a few. Many of their talents will be missed, but best wishes to this medical duo in their new endeavors and fields.
Greetings: Best wishes to Timmy Frye of Fudge Creek Road who will be celebrating another birthday on Monday 29th August. Timmy, son of the late Elba Frye Jr. and Deloris Frye, was my sisters’ long-time neighbor and remains my neighbor’s niece. May this Christian gentleman’s day be as special as his and add more blessings to his life.

Great Nephew: Oakley Jonathan Bowyer, son of Justin and Stephanie Bowyer, Salt Rock City, my great-nephew (he really is), one of his greatest, best, most thoughtful, brightest gentlemen age. This home-schooled little guy has a smile that can melt anyone and celebrates his eighth birthday on Sunday, August 28. He’s on a trip to Florida with his mom, visiting Gatorland and Sea World, and other places of his choice, dad and mom, Jeannie Grieco, but will soon be hosting a small party for others at his house. Oakley certainly has a bright heart and continues to spread joy throughout the family and hope for a great day and year.

Auction: Steele Memorial United Methodist Church in Barbersville welcomes new pastors Greg and Teresa Markins with their annual Ice Cream Social on Sunday, August 28 at 5 p.m. Hot dogs, desserts and auctions are also available. Funds raised from the auction of desserts are used for capital improvements to the church. Welcome to the community and the church family.
President: Ashland native Anna Detherage is not the President of the United States, but she currently serves as the Transylvanian University Circle (Chapter) President of the Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society in Lexington, Virginia.
New Pastor: Kenova United Methodist Church has a new pastor, Pastor Andrew Tennant, who was born and raised in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and started work in July. When he was 15, he received a preaching call while reading scriptures during weekly services at Stout Memorial United Methodist Church. He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a BA in Religion and English Literature, with a minor in Christian Education. After marrying Julie on August 7, 2009, they moved to Pittsburgh, where he graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 2012 with a Master of Divinity. Currently, he is pursuing a priesthood degree at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He has served Valley Chapel and Benton’s Ferry United Methodist Church from 2012-18 and Sistersville First and Friendly United Methodist Church from 2018-22. In 2016, he was ordained an elder in the West Virginia United Methodist Church. He and his wife Julie have two daughters, Luna, 7, and Esther, 4.
