Brian Tyree Henry said the “simplicity” of “The Causeway” attracted him.
The 40-year-old actor, who stars in the psychodrama alongside Jennifer Lawrence, explained how the project’s “stillness” convinced him to join Lila Neugebauer’s film.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brian said: “What attracted me to the script was its simplicity and serenity. There were no scenes like ‘Here comes the conflict, here comes the climax.’ It was really just about being human and being. “
The film stars Brian and Jennifer as James and Lindsay. Both are trauma survivors, as she suffered a brain injury while serving in Afghanistan, and he, a New Orleans mechanic dealing with his own pain, slowly opens up to each other as they explore possible friendships.
The “Bullet Train” star has revealed he wanted to explore the “sadness” of his “tortured” alter ego.
Bryan said: “James has a really fascinating character.
“There’s something about this guy – it’s easy to look at him and think he’s a tortured man, a down and out man.
“But I really want to understand how he got to where he is because I know he didn’t start there. I know there’s a certain spirit in James because of where he came from and what he did.
“But then this tragedy happened and it changed him. I wanted to explore what his grief was, how he was dealing with loss.”
The actor explained how he and Jennifer figured out what the film was really about between takes.
He said: “What I didn’t know was the connection with Jennifer would pop up. We honestly found out what the film was really about between takes.
“Really talking and calling out to each other and really being around each other and realizing that’s what James and Lindsay are.”
