10 million pounds will be provided to UNHCR and other humanitarian groups, and 20 million pounds will be used to support countries that provide asylum to refugees
Britain said on Friday that it will provide 30 million pounds (41 million US dollars) in aid to support Afghanistan’s neighboring countries in handling refugees who have fled the country since the Taliban control.
The British government stated that it will immediately provide 10 million pounds to UNHCR and other humanitarian organizations to help establish shelters and sanitation facilities at the border.
It said the rest will go to countries that have experienced large numbers of refugees to provide basic services and supplies.
“We must help those fleeing Afghanistan and not let the crisis there destabilize the region,” said Dominic Raab, the British Foreign Secretary.
The UN refugee agency said that by the end of this year, as many as 500,000 Afghans may have fled their homes. It is believed that many people who fled the country went to Pakistan, while Tajikistan, another neighboring country of Afghanistan, promised to accept 100,000 refugees.
The UK itself has stated that it will accept approximately 20,000 Afghan refugees, and it is expected that 5,000 refugees will arrive in the first year.
Earlier this month, the United Kingdom announced that it would double its humanitarian and development assistance to Afghanistan this year to 286 million pounds. Rab said during a visit to Qatar on Thursday that it was necessary to contact the Taliban.
