Lewis Hamilton is only now recovering from the pain of the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021, according to Martin Brundle.
The Mercedes driver was on track for a record-breaking eighth F1 drivers’ title ahead of the infamous safety car period, with the handling by FIA Car Control leading to Max Verstappen overtaking on the final lap, won his first championship title.
Since then, the Silver Arrows have been unable to provide Hamilton and team-mate George Russell with a competitive car, while Verstappen and Red Bull have dominated.
Speaking of Sky Sports F1Brundle said: “I think Abu Dhabi has hit Lewis so hard in 2021 that, honestly, in terms of what you’ve seen on the track, I’ve only seen him recovering now.
“They haven’t got the car yet … it’s a strong statement, but I believe it.”
Mercedes will add a major upgrade package to the W14 at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, hoping it will bridge the gap with Red Bull and get back into the race-winning fray.
On the team’s chances, Brundle explained: “It’s going to be tough from here and Red Bull is not standing still.
“They’re a great team – and we know that from their many world championships – doing their best in a car that doesn’t fit, and we’re surprised they don’t do it in 2023. Cars make more changes.
“There are various expressions, but we’ll see. They’ve got everything ready for the upgrade at Imola… haven’t they? We need someone to go after those Red Bulls.”
