Amnesty condemns Canada’s record on Indigenous rights Latest annual analysis on the human rights situation worldwide. In a report released, the group expressed concern for Indigenous peoples in Canada, saying they continue to face territorial expropriation and widespread inequality and repression.

“Indigenous peoples’ rights remain our main concern and serious concern,” said Ketty Nivyabandi, Secretary General of Amnesty International Ottawa Canada, adding that “the situation of Aboriginal peoples’ rights in Canada is a national disgrace.Despite many promises to address persistent injustices, the Government of Canada has failed to uphold the rights of Indigenous peoples and respect their lands and/resources.The climate crisis is exacerbating these injustices and requires government action Urgent and decisive action.”

Ketty Nivyabandi added: “We have seen Canada grossly fail to meet its obligations to uphold the rights of Indigenous peoples, to address the climate crisis and to fully support refugees and immigrants.”

According to CBC News, the secretary-general said the report puts “Canada on the world map when it comes to human rights abuses, which may not be something many Canadians are used to.”

In Canada, “the right to assembly is regularly threatened, particularly by Aboriginal land defenders,” the report said.

It added that “the authorities have failed to mitigate the climate crisis”, which affects indigenous peoples.
