Before the two Canadians left China, it was reported that Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei, flew back to China after reaching an agreement with the US authorities.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that two Canadian citizens detained in Beijing for more than 1,000 days have left Chinese airspace and will return to Canada early on Saturday.
Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were arrested in December 2018, when Canadian authorities arrested Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. under a US arrest warrant.
Shortly before Trudeau’s speech, Canadian media reported that Meng flew back to China after reaching an agreement with the US authorities.
“Twelve minutes ago, Kovrig and Michael Spavor left Chinese airspace on their way home,” Trudeau told reporters in a brief speech.

“These two people have gone through an incredibly difficult situation, but they are on their way home, which is inspiring good news for all of us.”
Trudeau said that Cumming Kai and Spavor were accompanied home by Canadian Ambassador to China Dominic Button.
“I know that there will be time for reflection and analysis in the next few days and weeks. But the fact is, I know Canadians will be very happy now. This Friday night, Michael Cumming Kai and Michael Spavor will be at On the plane, they are going home.”
Although Beijing has always insisted that the two cases are unrelated, Trudeau’s Liberal government has accused China of hostage diplomacy. Trudeau was not asked whether the two countries reached a bilateral agreement.
He said: “I want to thank our allies and partners who have firmly supported Canada and these two Canadians in the international community.”
