The Cannes Film Festival 2023 concluded in France on Saturday 27 May 2023 with a third female director taking home the top prize.
Marking the end of the festival, the closing ceremony was broadcast live on the French network and streamed worldwide. The ceremony was followed by the world premiere of Disney/Pixar Elemental by Disney/Pixar director Peter Sohn, The Hollywood Reporter.
The evening’s winner was French director Justine Triet, who won for her courtroom drama, anatomy of fall, Every type.
The award was presented by Jane Fonda, who spoke about her achievements since her first Cannes participation. “There were no female directors running back then, and we never thought there was anything wrong with that. We’ve come a long way,” she said.
Triet used it as an opportunity to protest against the French government’s austerity plans, including deep cuts to culture programs and pension reforms, which have sparked nationwide protests.
“This award is dedicated to all young female directors and all young male directors: all those who cannot make films today. We must give them the space I occupied 15 years ago in a less hostile world, where there are still It’s possible to make a mistake and start over.”
