The Alabama Arts Center in Decatur will feature artwork by John “Jahni” Moore through February 15th. Moore is the creator of many murals and public works from Chicago to Columbia, where he has twice served as Columbia’s art ambassador. “Clay Call”, An offshoot of the “Southern Tree” series, inspired by his adoration of Alabama’s red soil and reverence for his ancestors. Alabama Shakespeare Festival presents ‘Silver Jubilee’

Writer-director Tazewell Thompson brings the stirring soundtrack to life in this real-life-inspired a cappella. The world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers have brought joy to kings and queens by breaking down racial barriers in the United States and abroad. Born on the campus of Fisk University for more than 150 years, the bold a cappella African-American choir combines rich voices and shares a tradition of suffering, strength and endurance. Hear uplifting chants and hymns like “Wade” and “That’s Not Good News.” Showings will run through Sunday, January 29th. Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony explores the ins and outs of a war-torn country. Divided into four movements, Prokofiev’s heroic work ends with the poignant question “What happens after victory?” Principal Clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic, anthony mcgill, will showcase his artistry in two works, Racine’s Concerto and the world premiere of a new Clarinet Concerto written by Carlos Izcare, Music Director of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Come early on 13-14 January for the music ‘concert review’ at 6.15pm, then the concert itself at 7pm in Birmingham UAB Alys Stephens Center.

Expanding Darshan: Manjari Sharma, Seeing and Being Seen’

Works by contemporary artist Manjari Sharma are on view alongside the historic collections of the Birmingham Museum of Art (BMOA) in a striking exhibition, which runs until Sunday 15th January. The exhibition introduces nine of the most important deities of the Hindu pantheon and their contemporary relevance in art and belief as a gateway to the concept of darshan – seeing and being seen by the gods. The dynamic, changing and sometimes conflicting stories of these gods, and their familial ties to each other, are shared through the works in the exhibition. All featured works, many of which have never been shown to the public, come from the museum’s collection. “Expanding Darshan” is curated by BMOA’s Katherine Anne Paul, Virginia and William M. Auburn University MLK Scholarship Breakfast

This MLK Scholarship Breakfast is a collaboration between the East Alabama Chapter of the National Forum of Black Public Administrators and Auburn University’s Office of University Outreach and the Office of Inclusion and Diversity. The show will focus on Rev. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the Heersink School of Medicine invites the public to attend the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Keynote speaker Paulette Dilworth, UAB’s vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion, will speak about the importance of King and her thoughts on this year’s theme, “Together we achieve our dreams.” The event will include commentary by Anupam Agarwal and Mona Fouad, as well as a performance by the Myers College Choir. Giving Back to Bankhead and Talladega National Forests on Martin Luther King Jr. Day wild alabama:

  • Kinlock Shelter and Waterfall’s Bankhead Cleanup – Bankhead National Forest: Join a Wild Alabama tour to the Historic Kinlock District in Sipsey Wilderness. Explore the federally protected Kinloch Rock Refuge while removing trash. Afterwards, cleanup will move to the area around Kinloch Falls.   • Pinhoti (Heflin Spur) Talladega Cleanup and National Freedom Riders Memorial: Give back to the Talladega National Forest, learn about fair access to the wilderness and celebrate Alabama’s black pioneers.
