Captain Wolfgang Peterson dies at 81 Entertainment

Wolfgang Petersen dies at 81.

The acclaimed filmmaker – two Oscar nominees for writing and directing the war epic “Das Boot” – died Friday (08/12/22) at his home in Brentwood, Calif. in pancreatic cancer.

The German-born director, producer and screenwriter moved to Hollywood after the success of “Das Boot” and has spent his career with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford and Morgan Fury Liman et al.

His film credits also include “The NeverEnding Story”, “In the Line of Fire” and “Air Force One”.

However, Peterson admitted in 2016 that he regretted directing the 2006 Poseidon remake starring Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas and Richard Dreyfuss.

The film proved to be a money loser for the studio, with Peterson admitting he “probably shouldn’t have made” it.

He said: “I was happy at the time. ‘On the Line’, ‘Breakout’, ‘Air Force One, The Perfect Storm’, ‘Troy’ – I made all of them in a row and each one was more successful than the previous one .five in a row.

“So they said, ‘Wolfgang can do anything. Give him all the money and we’ll be fine.’ But that’s not the case. I shouldn’t do it because it doesn’t work that way. At some point You will fail.

Peterson, on the other hand, enjoyed making the 2000 biographical drama The Perfect Storm.

The film stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and John C. Reilly, among others, and Peterson admits to be “very proud” of the project.

He explained: “We got a lot of calls from people saying, ‘Wolfgang, don’t be crazy. This isn’t going to work. It’s a summer movie, a $150 million movie. They all die in the end. Are you crazy? Can you at least have a guy like Mark Wahlberg survive in the end? But we did.”
