Car ferry carrying 300 people catches fire off Swedish coast | World News

A massive rescue operation was underway off the coast of Sweden on Monday after a car ferry carrying 300 people caught fire, Swedish maritime authorities said.

“The car deck is on fire,” Jonas Franzen, a spokesman for the Swedish Maritime Administration, told AFP, adding that three helicopters and seven ships had been dispatched to the scene and evacuations had begun.

No casualties have been reported, and the cause of the fire is unknown.

“The fire is under control,” another spokeswoman, Lisa Mjjonen, told AFP.

The ship, Stena Scandica, is located off the island of Gotska Sandon off the southeastern coast of Sweden.
