Cathay Pacific launches air transport carbon offset scheme

[ad_1]

Cathay Pacific has extended its Fly Greener, a carbon offset scheme powered by an integrated carbon emissions calculator, to its air cargo service as part of its commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The new carbon emissions calculator calculates the carbon emissions of your cargo and the cost of offsetting carbon emissions in just a few simple steps. Customers can then contribute to the purchase of carbon offsets from carefully selected carbon offset projects. All selected projects are Gold Standard certified to ensure their carbon reductions are verified and deliver social and developmental benefits.

The carbon offset scheme is the first in its history to introduce SAF to Hong Kong International Airport, following Cathay Pacific’s corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) scheme launched earlier this year. It offers corporate clients the opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of business travel and air cargo by promoting the use of SAF. Cathay Pacific is also one of the first airlines in the world to announce a 10% SAF target for its total fuel use by 2030.

George Edmunds, General Manager of Cargo Commercial, said: “The Carbon Emissions Calculator is another tool we offer to help our clients achieve their sustainability goals, making our business and industry more sustainable. The promotion and development of sustainable aviation fuel capabilities, this calculator will give our customers the flexibility to offset their carbon emissions through a range of accredited carbon offset programs.”

Customers have been able to estimate their potential carbon emissions by searching for flight connections through the emissions calculator on cathaypacificcargo.com, but now registered customers using the site will be able to offset their shipments by an Air Waybill (AWB) number.

Users can enter five AWB numbers at a time, but can submit any number of applications in any one month. Using the latest IATA methodology, the tool will display emissions and offset charges in local currency, by weight and aircraft type.

This level of detail is at the heart of the plan, as explained by Simon Ng, CEO of Global Logistic System (HK) Co., Ltd (GLSHK), the Cathay Pacific subsidiary that designed the technology. Ng said: “A variety of factors can lead to differences in emissions from booked cargo. GLSHK has helped Cathay Pacific Cargo improve the performance of the cargo by using a variety of data sources to calculate emissions from cargo, including actual flight routes, aircraft types and actual distances flown. This system is designed to maximize the accuracy of compensation for our customers.”

After each submission, customers are sent a spreadsheet showing the totals of carryovers and claims, as well as carbon offset calculations. They will also receive a monthly statement showing all submissions from the previous month and the total to be settled. Clients will then receive a certificate showing the total offset and the projects they support for use in their own sustainability audit process.

Carbon credits purchased through Cathay Pacific and passed on to customers at cost, these financial contributions go directly to funding third-party verification projects that help offset CO2 from transportation. The airline has no profit in carbon offset deals.

The programme currently supports four projects to provide energy-efficient cookers for Bangladeshi households, solar hot water for Indian households, and solar cookers and small biogas plants for mainland Chinese households. You can read more about carbon offset projects here.

During the launch phase, the carbon emissions calculator will accept retrospective AWB numbers, but future iterations will see the tool built into Click & Ship, Cathay Pacific Cargo’s digital booking and confirmation solution. Customers will be able to add offsets directly to their bookings through a one-click process.

Chris Bowden, Head of Cargo Global Partnerships, said: “We are delighted to be advancing the industry’s sustainability leadership in Asia and we look forward to working with our customers to promote sustainable air cargo. We know that carbon offset calculations can be complex and Sustainability audits need to be accurate. We believe that the ease and simplicity of Fly Greener and the Carbon Emissions Calculator makes the rigor and complexity of Carbon Emissions calculations simple and user-friendly, something our clients have been using Actively sought.” – arab trade news agency
