CBS News’ flagship broadcast world news roundup turns 85

[ad_1]

CBS News’ flagship broadcast, The World News Roundup, will celebrate its 85th birthday on Monday, March 13, and the station’s news network will celebrate the milestone with a full-day special.

America’s longest-running news broadcast (by radio and television), launched on March 13, 1938, becoming the first to feature a single live coverage by reporters stationed around the globe. The premiere is hosted by the host bob trout From New York, focusing on “Europe in Turmoil.”

From Trout:

“The world trembles tonight, torn apart by conflicting forces. During the day, the activities of turbulent Austria abound. Meanwhile, the outside world, severely shaken by the crisis in Austria, treads cautiously in the labyrinth of diplomatic danger.

As German troops swarmed through for the first time since 1914, capitals outside Germany were making big decisions. For three days, therefore, the world’s spotlight has been on Austria, and tonight it will be shared by London’s tiny Downing Street, the Quay d’Orsay, the state buildings along the Seine in Paris, and other chancelleries around the world. To bring you a picture of Europe tonight, Columbia is now launching a special broadcast that will include pickups direct from London, Paris and other European capitals, as there are communications channels available abroad this late at night…”

The inauguration radio newscast also featured a Edward Murrow, and then the CBS news executive. Murrow reported from Vienna.

“I am Edward Murrow from Vienna. It is already 2:30 in the morning and Herr Hitler has not yet arrived. No one seems to know when he will be here, but most expect him to be here at 10:00 tomorrow morning Arrived sometime after. Of course, it was obvious at a glance that Vienna was preparing for a grand reception.

From the air, Vienna doesn’t look much different than it did before, however, it has changed. The crowd was as polite as ever, but many were on holiday; they raised their right arms a little higher here than in Berlin, and the “Heil Hitler” was a little louder. There isn’t a lot of hilarity, but at the same time there doesn’t seem to be much tension either.

There are still crowds along Ringstrasse, people still standing outside the main hotels, just waiting to see a certain celebrity come in or out. As I said, everything is quiet in Vienna tonight. There was an air of anticipation in the city, everyone was waiting, wondering when and where Herr Hitler would arrive. “

Fast forward 85 years, steve kerson is the anchor of World News Roundup, and jennifer kepper Anchor World News Roundup Late Edition. The broadcasts are available on SiriusXM POTUS Ch 124 on 156 CBS News radio stations nationwide and nationwide.

As part of the anniversary celebration, CBS News Audio launched the new CBS News Roundup podcast, which combines Weekend Roundup, World News Roundup, World News Roundup Late Edition and Kaleidoscope.

CBS News Broadcast is the dominant brand in the field, with World News Roundup being the recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award for Best News Broadcast 14 of the past 21 years, including the past nine consecutive years.

This is a 38 minute broadcast Atlantic Organization:
