LOS ANGELES — This time around, Charlize Theron is starting to see more women take major roles in film.

“Women are tearing down the whole … building,” Theron said Wednesday after receiving the prestigious Shirley Lansing Leadership Award at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Breakfast Gala in Los Angeles. The Oscar winner was presented with the award by her friend Seth Rogen in recognition of her work as a trailblazer and her philanthropic work in Hollywood.

Theron praised the female leaders who headed studio divisions, directed, produced, and founded their own production companies. Women should lean on each other as a resource to strengthen their voices, she said.

“I want us to hold each other accountable, to use each other as resources, and to push each other to continue to use our voices and our platforms to do things greater than ourselves,” Theron said. Inspired by young people, the Long Africa Outreach Project is an organization working to make a difference for the people of South Africa.

“In the face of what we think of as adversity or concrete ceilings, they see opportunity and room for change, growth and inclusion,” Theron said.

Previous recipients include Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Viola Davis, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Barbra Streisand.

In a heartfelt speech, Rogen called Theron the most impressive person around him. He then joked about how he was physically terrified of working on a project with Theron because “she kills people in every movie she does.”

Rogen’s joke drew a collective laugh from the audience. The actor made it even more hilarious by joking about the absence of Kim Kardashian, who was the event’s scheduled host.

“I’ve seen every episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I know she doesn’t do anything bigger than that,” Rogen said, as the audience laughed and clapped. Then he added, “She never did Live more important things than this. “

Theron commended the work of Issa Rae, who was earlier honored with the Entertainment Equity Award, which recognizes her amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities in the entertainment industry.

Yvonne Orji, who presented Rae with the award, called her a unique visionary and “adventurer”. She credits Rae with creating opportunity for people of color and showcased the beauty of South Los Angeles through five seasons of her HBO series “Insecure,” which ends in 2021.

“What stands out to me is her unwavering support for the marginalized, her extreme selflessness, and her unyielding belief that everyone can win,” said Orgi, who starred in “Insecure.”

Rae said some of her success can be attributed to “operating in a place of fear.”

“It makes you impatient with what you want to happen,” she said. “It makes you fearless about things you might normally be afraid of.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, Janelle Monae, Margot Robbie, Addison Rae and Gracie Abrams awarded scholarships as part of THR’s Women in Entertainment Mentorship Program.

Awarded approximately $1 million in college scholarships to female high school students from underserved communities in Los Angeles. High school students will also be paired with top female entertainment executives, attorneys and agents.

Members of the incoming class of 2023 also received new Apple Mac Book Air laptops provided by the Edie Wasserman Women in Hollywood Fund.
