Lebanese chess champion Nadia Fawaz withdrew from the fourth round of the 28th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival to avoid competing with Israeli competitors.
The 28th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival was attended by players from 36 countries, including Lebanon, who competed according to their rank.
Fawaz played the first 3 matches against Brunei player Wafa Yacoub and beat her. She also defeated Ziad Saleh Abdali of Saudi Arabia and Wafia Darwish al-Maamari of the United Arab Emirates.
However, Lebanon’s journey in the tournament ended with Fawaz’s exit as her 4th round will pit her against an Israeli player.
In an interview with Al-Manar TV, Khalid Boudeh, head of the Lebanese Chess Federation, stressed that Fawaz’s move was made in the context of the Federation’s law and she was impressed with her courage to take it Express appreciation.
Her refusal to play against the Zionist opponent was a statement of refusal to normalize relations with the Israeli enemy, a position Lebanese players and athletes have always taken in international competitions.
Just last week, Lebanon’s Charbel Abou Daher withdrew from the 2022 Youth Mixed Martial Arts World Championships, also in Abu Dhabi, to avoid taking on his Israeli opponent.
