Chicago shooting victims: Mexican grandfather, teacher among those killed World News

[ad_1]

A teacher and a man in his 70s travelled from Mexico to visit family members. Six shot dead in Chicago’s wealthy Highland Park Late Monday night, there was another horrific mass shooting in the United States. The incident – during the July 4 parade – also left more than 36 people injured. Shortly after the shooting, a “person of interest” – Robert E. Cremer III – was detained and a high-powered rifle was recovered.

The gunman opened fire on the holiday crowd, sparking chaos as panicked onlookers fled for their lives, leaving the parade route littered with chairs, discarded balloons and personal items. At least 24 people, including children, were injured – some seriously.

Who were the victims of the Highland Park shooting?

Nicholas Toledo

The first person identified was Nicolas Toledo, who came from Mexico to celebrate the Fourth of July with his grandchildren. “My grandfather, Nicholas Toledo, father of 8 and many, left us on the morning of July 4th… What was supposed to be a fun family day turned out to be for all of us. A terrible nightmare,” said his granddaughter Xochil Toledo.

“Nicholas was a caring man, creative, adventurous and funny. As a family we were broken…”

Toledo’s family set up a crowdfunding page to raise money to return his body to Mexico; Reuters said it had raised more than $33,000 as of early Tuesday.

Jackie Sondheim

Another victim was Jacki Sundheim, a teacher at Highland Park Synagogue. The North Shore congregation in Israel confirmed her death. “No words can express our deep sadness for Jackie’s passing and our sympathies to her family and loved ones.”

The synagogue said her husband and daughter survived.

So far, the identities of the other four deaths have not been determined.

The Chicago media report does have some other details.

according to ABC Eyewitness News, the victims ranged in age from eight to eighty-five. Five of them died at the scene and a sixth died in hospital.

The Highland Park July 4 parade shooting comes weeks after the heartbreaking tragedy in Uwald, Texas, where 19 schoolchildren and 2 teachers killed. On May 10, a shooting at a New York grocery store killed several people.

Respond to these and more than 300 others 2022 shootings Just last month, President Joe Biden signed into law what is being billed as the first major federal gun safety bill in decades.

In doing so, however, Biden said the law lacks what it needs to save lives.

The law includes tougher checks on young buyers and federal funding for states that have introduced “red flag” laws that allow for the (temporary) removal of weapons from people deemed a threat.

It does not include a ban on military rifles and other high-powered guns – such as those used by the Highland Park Killer and other shooters.
