Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Turani Cerrero’s contract with United Arab Emirates (UAE) side Jazira Club is expected to expire at the end of this month.

A Siya source close to the player said Serero might not be short of suitors even if Al Jazira lets him go.

A source close to the 33-year-old Soweto-born said he believed there was interest from two local teams. The source further added that the stumbling block to such a transfer could be affordability.

Sources say the former Ajax star earns more than $25,000 a month in the UAE, a salary that South Africa’s DStv Premiership side will struggle to match in his view.

“There’s always been interest. The Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sunset have inquired about him before and even now and they know he’s going to be a free agent,” the Siya source said.

“I can tell you that both teams have been in touch with his agent and the player himself, but nothing yet. They are waiting for the end of the season to see if Al Jazira will re-sign him, but because of the There is no word and they are trying to bring him home,” the Siya source continued.

“But even if money isn’t an issue, I know he’s not ready to go home. He believes he can still play two or three seasons in Europe or Asia. So, it will take a lot of work to convince him to go home at this time, mainly in the upcoming season.

“But, that’s football, you never know what’s going to happen next. But, so far, if it’s going to happen, it’s going to be between the Chiefs and the Sunset.

“These teams have been following his progress and they’ve been very interested in his services. But you know, in football these days, it’s all about money. So if they make an offer that can be compared to a European or Asian offer Then maybe he can come to South Africa, but like now, he is thinking about staying abroad. But let’s wait and see what happens,” a source told the Siya crew.

Cerrero moved to the Netherlands in 2011, joining Ajax Amsterdam from former sister club Ajax Cape Town. After many successful years in Europe, Cerrero moved to Asian club Al Jazira in 2019.

The Emirates have remained silent on his contract extension. Neither Chiefs nor Sundowns officials were available for comment when contacted by Siya staff.
