MAKTABA, the library management department of the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi), will resume its popular MAKTABA winter camp this month. The program will be held at the MAKTABA branch in Abu Dhabi from December 18th to 25th, with a wealth of entertainment and educational activities tailored for children between 7 and 12 years old. The camp will help children spend a productive winter vacation, unleash their creativity and hone their reading, writing and artistic skills.
Shaikha Mohamed Almehairi, Director of the Library Management Department of DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “A core aspect of the MAKTABA strategy is to organize effective programs and activities to inspire children to acquire knowledge and learn new skills. Our annual winter camp is very popular this year. Very popular. We look forward to seeing a series of interesting and educational seminars and activities that can improve participants’ intelligence and stimulate their creative potential.”
Some winter camp seminars focus on the importance of reading in different cultures. The “Hakawati” seminar involves stories and lessons related to cultural heritage, while the “Meet the Author” seminar features stories inspired by the folklore of the Asir region in southern Saudi Arabia. “Rebuild Your Reading Habits” will introduce simple steps to help children develop long-term reading habits.
The MAKTABA winter camp also includes courses that encourage children to use their creativity and artistic skills. Participants can learn how to make candles in the “Alien Creation” workshop, use wool balls to make “Alien Figures”, and use cotton and watercolor in the “Butterfly Painting” workshop for unique artistic creations. “Zine Workshop” will teach children how to make self-made publications composed of drawings, text, collages, photos or clip art.
In a world dominated by text messages and emails, the “letter” seminar will explore the differences between paper letters and electronic letters, teach them how to write and decorate physical letters, and how to post letters. “Brush Engraving” will help children practice their brush controls to create various letters and shapes, and the “Bookmark Making” workshop will allow participants to make customized bookmarks to take home.
All MAKTABA winter camp projects will start at 4 pm every day (except Friday) and will be held in the MAKTABA branch of Al Wathba Library, Al Bahia Library, Khalifa Park Library, Al Marfa Library and Zayed Central Library.
