Virus cases in China are rising again, climbing near the peak of the pandemic. The country reported 24,028 infections on Thursday, the highest since April, when the Shanghai outbreak spurred a surge in the national total. Authorities say they are bracing for more infections as the country relaxes some of its Covid-zero rules.

Here are the latest developments in China regarding Covid:
1. Guangzhou, the manufacturing center in the south, remains a hotspot, with more than 9,000 new cases.
2. Chongqing, China’s most populous city, said it had detected 4,631 new infections.
3. Since the virus policy change was announced on Friday, the number of cases nationwide has more than doubled.
4. China will build more hospitals dedicated to treating moderate to severe COVID-19 patients, and ensure that intensive care units account for 10% of all hospital beds to take care of the most vulnerable patients.
5. Some areas in Guangzhou are still under lockdown, while restrictions in other areas have been eased.
6. Beijing reported 458 local cases on Thursday, the highest among current cases.
7. Some public places such as gyms and shops in Chaoyang District, where the most confirmed cases have been confirmed, have been closed, and schools in the affected areas have switched to online teaching.
