Chinese envoy expresses concern over U.S. tariffs on Yellen

[ad_1]

China’s special envoy for trade war negotiations with Washington expressed concerns about U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports in a phone call with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday, but did not signal progress in resolving a series of conflicts, the Commerce Department announced. made progress.

Vice Premier Liu He and Yellen also discussed global economic and supply chain issues, a Foreign Ministry statement said. “The Chinese side expresses concern over issues such as the U.S. lifting of tariffs and sanctions on China and fair treatment of Chinese companies,” the statement said.

The Treasury Department did not make any announcements. U.S. offices were closed Monday for the Independence Day holiday. President Joe Biden said on June 18 that he was deciding whether to roll back some tariff hikes on Chinese imports by his predecessor Donald Trump to address Beijing’s technological ambitions and trade surplus.

Yellen calls for rollback of some of these tariffs to reduce U.S. inflation. Other U.S. officials, including Trade Representative Kathryn Day, have expressed concern that China will roll back tariffs when it fails to meet certain promises to buy more U.S. goods. Trade envoys from the two governments meet regularly by phone and video link, but they have yet to announce a date for the resumption of face-to-face talks.
