Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer) announced on Sunday that it had processed more than 1.86 million tonnes of waste, including 88,382 tonnes of medical and hazardous waste, and handled 50,000 pest control requests in the first half of 2022.
Tadweer successfully diverts 34% of Abu Dhabi’s waste from landfill. This includes diverting 50% of demolition and construction work waste, 93% of hazardous waste, 3% of green waste and 6% of animal waste.
It has also signed contracts to operate pest control services and vector pest reduction, in addition to adopting the No Objection Certificate (NOC) electronic approval system in Abu Dhabi and organizing awareness campaigns throughout the emirate.

How to dispose of medical waste
Tadweer says it works to process and recycle a wide range of waste, with medical and hazardous waste being one of the most important types of waste handled by the center using the best standards and practices available in the field. This is done through its three centres in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, which collect, transport and process all medical waste generated by hospitals, clinics, healthcare centres, pharmacies, educational institutions and more. The waste is incinerated at temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Celsius “while adhering to the best environmental and health practices in the UAE”.

Tadweer recycled around 29,000 tonnes of agricultural and animal waste in the first half of 2022, in line with the emirate’s vision to achieve environmental targets related to proper waste management, recycling and diversion of waste from landfills. This contributed to the production of approximately 13,000 tonnes of organic fertilizer, in addition to the production of approximately 1.2 million tonnes of recycled gravel from demolition and construction waste in Abu Dhabi during the same period.
The total amount of recyclable waste collected from recycling centres in the first half of this year amounted to 39 tonnes. More than two-thirds (67%) of these are made of paper and cardboard materials, in addition to plastics, wood, clothing, expired medicines, used batteries, metal, aluminum cans, glassware, and more.

In pest control, vector pest infestation rates fell to 1.9 percent, well below the minimum acceptable rate of 5 percent. As the number of smart mosquito traps across the emirate increased to 640, the mosquito infection rate dropped to 1.4%. The center also received 50,000 requests for control of vector pests, nuisance pests and stray animals, “all of which were handled in accordance with the highest international standards and global practices.”
The Centre, which monitors the waste sector, identified approximately 1,095 cases of indiscriminate dumping of solid waste and 5,248 cases of dumping sewage in Abu Dhabi.

Tadweer organized around 21 awareness campaigns in Abu Dhabi, including field trips to various educational and government agencies, benefiting over 14,000 people in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dafra. Tadweer’s achievements in the first half of 2022 include the signing of four operating contracts worth AED 235 million to provide value-added services to its customers and communities, and to properly and safely dispose of waste in accordance with approved standards and practices.
