Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a partner of Mubadala Health, recently introduced lymphedema bypass surgery for breast cancer patients in the UAE, after research showed that one in five breast cancer patients suffer from lymphedema. risk.

Lymphedema is usually caused by cancer, surgery to remove axillary lymph nodes for cancer, or radiation therapy. It is a debilitating disease that manifests as acute swelling of the upper arm after the removal of metastatic lymph nodes. This condition increases the likelihood of infection and has social, psychological, and physical consequences for people already undergoing cancer treatment.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, making it the most common form of cancer worldwide. The WHO Global Cancer Observatory also noted that breast cancer was the most common cancer in the UAE in 2020, with 1,030 new cases reported that year.

The Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi has partnered with the Cleveland Clinic in the United States to bring this preventive surgery to the UAE, where a recent operation was performed on a patient whose breast cancer had metastasized to the lymph nodes. This surgery is usually performed at the same time as other primary cancer surgery, such as mastectomy, as a preventive measure for lymphedema and may not require further surgery.

Dr. Raffi Gurunian, Chief of Plastic Surgery and Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi, said: “Performing this lymphedema preventive supermicrosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi will provide greater access to this treatment and better access to Laying the groundwork for positive results, especially for post-operative breast cancer patients who are at high risk for developing lymphedema. This type of surgery is our key to advancing patient-centred and preventative care-focused healthcare at the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi This approach is closely aligned with the Ministry of Health – Abu Dhabi’s growing focus and investment in preventive and precision medicine.

“Lymphedema is a debilitating condition that often causes social isolation and limited mobility. While this bypass surgery can provide relief, people also need to be mindful of their lifestyle choices to avoid further developing health-related complications. Obesity and other pre-existing comorbidities increase the likelihood of developing lymphedema after breast cancer surgery. Being able to manage both the physical and psychological impact of cancer and treatment is key to patient success. Given breast cancer prevalence in the UAE, we expect Doing more of these preventive surgeries in breast cancer patients can avoid developing lymphedema and help ease this stigma-causing condition.”
