CNN Academy Abu Dhabi has opened its doors to 30 new aspiring journalists, learning from the experts in news brands for the second year in a row.
More than 150 people applied, 30 of whom were selected as members of the second cohort of CNN Abu Dhabi Academy. The group includes 23 women and 7 men from 12 different countries including Egypt, India, Kenya, Nigeria, and 16 representatives from the United Arab Emirates. The application process is supported by the Talent Development Initiative Creative Lab and Arab Film Studios.
CNN Abu Dhabi Editor-in-Chief and Connect the World anchor Becky Anderson conducts a series of introductory sessions with participants at twofour54’s Yas Creative Hub, before taking them behind the scenes to see her flagship show being produced and broadcast live at twofour54 from the CNN studio .
She said: “This year’s participants were dynamic and created a real buzz about what was in front of them. We are excited to build on the success of the first Abu Dhabi CNN Academy, which has driven many career advancements, There are even careers started at CNN. I can’t wait to help mentor this new cohort of fellows and see what they can offer after learning from the excellent team of experts CNN has assembled for them.”
The course begins with a live interactive workshop on the art of storytelling and programming in today’s news ecosystem. The syllabus will cover ten core topics, including a mix of face-to-face and online courses, including on-demand courses in English and Arabic. Taught by CNN’s renowned journalists and technologists from around the globe, participants will gain critical industry skills to tell compelling stories for multiple platforms.
Fellows will also attend the Global Media Conference in Abu Dhabi, where they will use smartphones to produce, film and edit packages after learning about mobile storytelling. The course will culminate in the inaugural CNN Academy Newsroom Simulation, which will challenge them to investigate and report fictional breaking news stories in a realistic, fast-paced environment, during which a team of experienced CNN staff members Panels will judge their work.
The new community hub at Yas Creative Centre, featuring the Creative Lab and Image Nation’s Arabian Film Studio, will provide facilities and infrastructure, including equipment, learning resources, student liaison and outreach, and graduation ceremonies.
