‘Cocaine Bears’ soars to $23.1 million, ‘Ant-Man’ slides quickly

[ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — Gonzo R-rated horror-comedy “Cocaine Bear” earned $23.1 million in its opening weekend, while Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum” earned $23.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Frenzy quickly dwarfed its second weekend by comparison.

what you need to know

  • ‘Cocaine Bears’ earns an estimated $23.1 million in opening weekend
  • ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum of Madness’ Remains at No. 1 with Estimated Earnings of $32.2M
  • “Jesus Revolution” came in at No. 3 with an estimated $15.5 million in revenue
  • “Avatar: Way of Water” is No. 4 with an estimated $4.7 million

“Quantum Mania” Still No. 1, it grossed an estimated $32.2 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters. But the Ant-Man sequel has some of the worst critical and audience ratings in the MCU, falling 69.7 percent in its second weekend. It was the biggest drop for any MCU film, outpacing Black Widow (67.8%), a pandemic title that was also playing at home.

Instead, Universal’s “Cocaine Bear” swept multiple theaters, scoring significantly above expectations. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, “Cocaine Bear,” which cost about $35 million, garnered a lot of attention just because of its title and a trailer designed to go viral.

“Cocaine Bear,” written by Jimmy Verden and produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (“Into the Spider-Verse,” “The Lego Movie”), manages to turn a bizarre true story into a Language – a box office hit. It’s based on the true story of a 175-pound (79-kilogram) black bear who died in 1985 in the Georgia mountains after eating a duffel bag full of cocaine that fell from a smuggler’s plane. (The smuggler was a former Kentucky drug investigator who died by skydiving in Tennessee.)

Universal said the “Cocaine Bear” trailer, which aired ahead of the Super Bowl, was viewed by more than 90 million people worldwide and became a social media sensation. But transferring the “can you believe that’s a real movie” hype to the box office hasn’t always worked. In 2006, “Snakes on a Plane,” a film on a par with “Cocaine Bear,” opened with $13.9 million.

“Audiences have discovered this very outrageous, hysterical comedy delivered by our director, Elizabeth Banks,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s head of distribution. “The movie absolutely delivered on its ridiculous premise. People figured out to come out and have fun in theaters.”

Despite mixed reviews from critics and a CinemaScore of “B-” from audiences, “Cocaine Bear” still performed well. 59% of ticket buyers were men, and 63% were between the ages of 18-34. It added $5.3 million overseas. “Quantum Fever” easily surpassed “Cocaine Bears” internationally, taking in an extra $46.4 million for the weekend.

The epitome of Lionsgate’s ‘Cocaine Bear’ reverse programming “Jesus Revolution” Also made a strong debut. Also inspired by true stories, the film stars Kelsey Grammer as a California priest and Joel Courtney as a youth priest, bringing Christian hippies of the late ’60s and early ’70s to life. Movement dramatized. It launched with $15.5 million over the weekend and in early screenings. “Jesus Revolution” produced by Kingdom Story Company was well received by Christian audiences and exceeded expectations early. It earned an A+ CinemaScore.

Next week will usher in a new box office champ, Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed three.”

U.S. and Canadian theater ticket sales are expected Friday through Sunday, according to Comscore. Final domestic data will be released on Monday.

  1. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Fever,” $32.2 million
  2. “Cocaine Bears,” $23.1 million
