People will spare no effort to save animals in need. Recently, in an effort to relieve pressure at SeaWorld Orlando, Florida, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium made room in their facility to receive four newly injured juvenile manatees. Seaworld has experienced a staggering number of aquatic marine mammals in trouble.
according to @thecolumbusdispatch Four female manatees were transported to Columbus and rescued as newborn calves in 2020 and 2021. For this major move, DHL Express transported these manatees in custom state-of-the-art containers. Unfortunately, the three manatees that were delivered were orphaned.
Since the opening of the Manatee Coast exhibit in 1999, the zoo has hosted 39 manatees. While the facility currently has 9 manatees, including 4 new manatees, and 2 male calves that came to the zoo in April, the new additions have some very interesting names.
The female manatees are named after some pretty important women in the entertainment industry, nothing more than; Lizzo, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Cardi B. However, the manatee dropped the B and was named Cardi-Tee. In a Sunday press release, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, along with SeaWorld, said, “As a Phase 2 rehabilitation facility, the Columbus Zoo is one of only two facilities outside of Florida that care for manatees.”
“The team will care for the animals until they gain weight to return to Florida waters when conditions are favorable,” the statement continued. In a separate statement from SeaWorld Orlando’s vice president of animal operations Jon Peterson, he revealed that manatees are Listed as “threatened” on the endangered species list, as manatee populations continue to decline to dangerously low levels. Florida manatee populations are also increasing. Roommates, do you think animals should be named after famous people?
