That being said, the show opens next week, and I guarantee we’ll have you covered. However, just before the show began, the cast and crew added many new technical elements to make the show more realistic. Clothing begins to be tested. Rehearsal props in exchange for props that we will use in the show. The growing pains were stretched as we walked from the rehearsal room to the actual set. Lights and sound will be added soon and we’ll all have to get used to the bright lights and how to control our sound with mic packs and gizmos on our faces.
All of this means one thing that cannot be denied: This is actually happening. We actually got to perform this extremely difficult drama for the audience. While this often serves as a test of an actor’s confidence in the health of the production, it can also be used as turbo fuel for the next phase. It’s a bit like athletes preparing for a major sporting event.
Over the past few years, in addition to being a professional basketball fan, I have also become a professional ice hockey fan. With both the NHL and NBA seasons in the playoffs, it’s interesting to note the similarities.
One idea I remember from studying was to create an element of a dramatic event that would give the audience the same feeling as watching a live sporting event. The stakes are high, the lines are drawn, and no one knows what the outcome will be. Needless to say, tensions were high.
Where this applies to this show is in the way a farce is constructed. As I’ve said many times on my podcast, comedy is about watching a person (or a few people) be presented with a series of potentially unparalleled situations and seeing if they can bring the world back to hilarious effect again; maybe they Yes, maybe they won’t.
However, since it involves a team sport, usually the audience is cheering for the same team. Secretly, audiences hope that the cast will bring the world back to normal again, but don’t know if that’s going to happen. All they know is they’ll enjoy watching it, and if the actors get out of their invincible situations, the effect should be similar to when your team wins! cheer!
In some cases, I’ve actually seen the audience not only applaud and laugh, but also cheer at the end of an actor’s performance, much like a sports audience wins a game at the buzzer.
We hope that’s what you find as you sit in the auditorium at WYO for the next two weeks. We will bring our A-Game and our A-Team. You can sit there and see if we win.
