exclusive: Conqueror Films, the Los Angeles and Beijing production company founded by former Legendary executive Vasco Xu, has adapted a novel by renowned sci-fi author Cixin Liu into Chinese supernova era as its first project.
The company also plans to simultaneously produce an English-language film and TV series in the United States based on the same novel.
Ann Lu is working with Xu Jianzheng (bid farewell), Zhao Jilong (three body problem) and Kong Ergou (crossroads) on board as a producer. Zheng Boen and Sun Ge of Conqueror Entertainment will serve as executive producers.
Liu Cixin is best known for the Hugo trilogy, three body problemAdapted into an English-language series by Netflix, executive produced by David Benioff and DB Weiss (game of Thrones). He also wrote novellas The Wandering Earthhas been adapted into two blockbuster Chinese-language films.
supernova era, first published in 2003, tells the story of the events after a supernova explosion flooded Earth with deadly radiation from which only children under 13 can recover. Adults on Earth try to teach their children to take over responsibly when they die untimely. But as the new world order was established, some societies degenerated into barbarism while others tried to ensure the survival of humanity.
Tor Books is published in English supernova agetranslated by Joel Martinsen in 2019.
“The book intrigued me because of Liu’s imaginative world-building and thought-provoking themes, such as the fragility of civilization, the importance of leadership, and the role of technology in shaping society,” Xu said.
“It also questions the nature of power, the relationship between science and morality, and the influence of different forms of administration. Due to its futuristic setting and the presence of a major global event, the book has the potential to be adapted into two parts Compelling productions that captivate domestic Chinese audiences and global markets.”
Xu co-founded Conqueror Entertainment last year Cooperate with Cheng Cheng, executive director of Hong Kong NWS Group, and Sun Ge, venture capitalist.
The company said its goal is to provide universal stories based on Asian IP or Asian perspectives to the global market. It is developing a separate Chinese version specifically for the mainland Chinese market.
This dual-track strategy is becoming more common as Chinese-American co-productions have struggled to get off the ground as approvals by Chinese authorities have slowed in recent years. Regulatory issues aside, American and Chinese producers are also finding it difficult to produce films that appeal to both markets.
