To date, more than 197.6 million PCR tests have been performed in the country
The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention reported 108 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus on Saturday, with 172 recoveries and no deaths.
The total number of active cases is 16,399.
New cases were detected through 24,647 additional tests
As of December 17, the total number of cases in the UAE stood at 1,046,086, while the overall recovery rate was 1,027,339. The death toll now stands at 2,348.
To date, more than 197.62 million PCR tests have been performed in the country.
As the third anniversary of the original outbreak approaches, the World Health Organization says the virus is here to stay but needs to be managed alongside other respiratory diseases.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the weekly death toll from COVID-19 is now about one-fifth of what it was a year ago – but still ridiculously high.
“Last week, less than 10,000 people lost their lives. That’s still 10,000 more, and there is a lot that all countries can do to save lives,” he told a news conference.
“But we’ve come a long way. We hope that sometime next year, we’ll be able to say that Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency.”
