CHARLOTTE – A work hiatus became the inspiration for Davita Galloway, award-winning costume designer and co-owner of creative studio DUPP&SWAT.
After winning an award from the Metrolina Theater Society for her costume design in the new Sheriff Productions production of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” Galloway is looking for ways to unwind.
“I’m a creative through and through, and I can ‘art’ in a variety of mediums,” she says. “I think I need to remind myself of this. Initially, I was motivated to create as an easy form of expression. Now I’m motivated to keep creating because I’m satisfied with the process. Also, it’s about repurposing my garments Great way to stock up.”
In October, Galloway found itself interrupted between productions and needed to do “something” with excess fabric and trim stock. That “thing” is “Girls of Color,” a collection of 25 mixed-media artworks of various sizes and shapes.
Galloway said that despite the provocative title of the collection, the pieces were dubbed “Girls of Color” because they were full of colour, print and pattern. Each piece has a first and middle name inspired by the dichotomies and complexities of women.
“I didn’t know I could make faces,” she said. “I just wanted to create. But when I started evaluating my inventory and looking for jewellery, textured pieces and more, I wanted to tell women how beautiful and rich our unique features are – so each piece is different, And each has its own characteristics.”
The collection, which starts at $175, will debut during the opening ceremony from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. November 26 at DUPP&SWAT Studios, Camp North End, 1824 Statesville Ave.These works will also be in davitagaloway.com.
“I definitely see myself continuing the collection for a while and having shows in various galleries,” Galloway said. “I’m also happy to sell the pieces at various retailers.”
